{"id":15822,"date":"2019-12-16T18:23:21","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T18:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/?p=15822"},"modified":"2019-12-16T18:24:47","modified_gmt":"2019-12-16T18:24:47","slug":"little-kickers-founder-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/2019\/12\/little-kickers-founder-interview","title":{"rendered":"The Story Behind Little Kickers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/category\/behind-the-biz\">Behind the Biz interview<\/a> I&#8217;m chatting with Christine Kelly, the founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlekickers.co.uk\">Little Kickers<\/a> &#8211; they teach high quality football skills to children in a fun, friendly and pressure-free environment. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>But first, here&#8217;s a little overview of the business.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Little Kickers is a global, football-themed activity initiative for inquisitive pre-schoolers, a bona-fide market leader in its field that began life back in 2002 as a tentative, one-woman pilot scheme in Clapham.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Today Little Kickers stands tall as one of the UK\u2019s most forward-thinking and dynamic franchise institutions, a positive first introduction to sport for inquisitive pre-schoolers which also teaches invaluable learning\/life skills such as number &amp; colours recognition, sharing, following instructions and taking turns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Seventeen years down the line from its tentative launch, Little Kickers now operates across 34 countries (330 franchises), providing classes for 65,000+ children each &amp; every week<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Little Kicker\u2019s focus is appealing to health-conscious, sports-loving parents who subscribe to active, healthier living regimes and who want a similarly positive first exposure to fun-based, group-orientated activities for their children.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"466\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-kelly.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-kelly.jpg 466w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-kelly-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-kelly-370x556.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-kelly-386x580.jpg 386w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What did you do before Little Kickers?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I joined Price Waterhouse in 1993 as a trainee chartered accountant.&nbsp; I knew early on that I hated this career path and jumped ship at the earliest opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there I talked my way on to JP Morgan\u2019s (1995) graduate scheme to become a risk manager. I absolutely loved my time in London and Wall Street and yet as fun as this high octane lifestyle was, it simply wasn\u2019t conducive to settling down and starting a family.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2002 I had the unenviable distinction of moving to Enron, just four months before it made history as the biggest ever corporate capitulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you always intend to set up your own business? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve always had an eye for an opportunity and have never been afraid to change career direction however you won\u2019t hear me knocking corporate life because it was the \u2018full on\u2019 work environment that shaped me and if I hadn\u2019t had exposure to such an all-encompassing career path, Little Kickers wouldn\u2019t be the brand it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8-370x278.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8-570x428.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8-770x578.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Christine-8-773x580.jpg 773w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What inspired you to set up Little Kickers? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea came about when as a young mum I found myself getting increasingly frustrated by the depressing dearth of activity-orientated initiatives for inquisitive pre-schoolers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea of turning my back on a well-paid career to launch Little Kickers filled me with dread, especially since at that moment in time I had zero spare cash to fund even the most basic set up costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result my two ex-business partners and I each invested \u00a3300 and hoped we could establish a dynamic, self-funding venture, which thankfully was the case.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, with proper financial backing at the outset we could unquestionably have got to where we are today a lot quicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-1024x539.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-1024x539.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-768x404.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-370x195.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-570x300.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-770x405.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-1170x615.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7-1103x580.jpg 1103w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-kickers-7.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Please share a business high and low with us.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was recently awarded an honorary Doctor of Business Administration by my old university (Aston) for my contribution to entrepreneurship which was from a personal perspective very moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an ongoing frustration of mine (although change is definitely afoot!)&nbsp; just how hard it remains (esp in some overseas markets) to convince parents that exposure to football-based activity is as good for girls as it is boys. Today 20% of our young attendees are girls, which is a big improvement on the \u2018early years\u2019 but not good enough. I was someone who was brought up believing that being female shouldn\u2019t be a barrier to anything and so making Little Kickers appealing to everyone remains an ongoing priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What would you tell tomorrow&#8217;s aspiring entrepreneurs?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always play to your strengths as opposed to being an alright all-rounder.&nbsp; In the early ideas we had the idea of spreading our thinking into other pursuits like rugby and dance and yet the simple reality is that football-themed activities, always was &amp; is our specialist subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-1024x539.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-1024x539.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-768x404.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-370x195.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-570x300.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-770x405.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-1170x615.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2-1103x580.jpg 1103w, https:\/\/www.prettygreentea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Little-Kickers-2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>How have you helped change your marketplace?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think we\u2019re doing our bit to show franchising in its most positive light.&nbsp; Franchising has unfairly been frowned upon in some quarters as perhaps an unsexy field of marketing and yet the opportunities remain infinite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst it\u2019s pivotal that head office remains the guiding custodian of the brand, (standards, tone, priorities) we\u2019ve brought a genuine collaborative approach to proceedings, involving franchisees in the wider decision-making process, adopting best-in-class suggestions and nurturing a respectful co-operative environment for all.  It\u2019s certainly no fluke that many of our best ideas (party offer, an English language learning programme\u2026 ) came from our franchisees or that our staff retention track record is better than most. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What will be a lead priority in 2020?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe it\u2019s critical that we establish a meaningful and sincere socially responsible arm to our business.
